The Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) is a national union for Primary and Basic Education Appointed Teachers that was formed in 1997 and registered in 1999 under the Industrial and labour Relations Act CAP 269 of the Laws of Zambia, as the Primary Teacher’s Education Union of Zambia (PETUZ). The union was formed in 1999, with an initial membership of three hundred (300). The name was later changed to Basic Education Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) in 2004, in line with Government policy of transforming all primary schools into Basic Schools.
WHAT THE UNION DOES/ORGANIZATION FOCUS/ STANDS FOR.
Our key focus as BETUZ is to represent all Primary Appointed Teachers in the Country and ensure that their rights are protected and building in the Teachers ‘responsibility’. Our main aim as BETUZ is to unite all primary and basic appointed teachers in primary and basic schools. As a union, we aim to observe and act in accordance with the spirit and principle of democracy, transparency and tolerance in all activities.
MISSION
The Mission statement that guides BETUZ’s current programs and activities is “A Zambia were teachers’ rights are respected and upheld through collective bargaining, lobbying, advocacy, workers education, training, information dissemination and resolution of grievances.”
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
> To recruit and represent all primary and basic appointed teachers in the country. Promote a high code of professional excellence, efficiency, devotion and make such representation to the government through the Ministry of Education and ensure that posts in the ministry are open to all eligible teachers regardless of sex, race, creed and tribe.
> To seek and maintain itself as a union of teachers under the BETUZ category to be recognized by the Ministry of Education authorities and to this end to negotiate on behalf of all primary and basic appointed teachers in the country by advancing their individual and collective interest in entering into collective agreements as the sole representative of all Primary and appointed teachers in Zambia .
> To establish, invest, and administer funds for the benefit of members.
> To promote, oppose as the case may be, any laws and administrative procedures that affect the interest of the members in particular and education in general.
OUR VISION
The Basic Education Teacher’s Union of Zambia (BETUZ)’s vision is to see a “Zambia were teachers’ rights, professional development and remuneration are of higher standards for attainment of quality universal Basic Education for All.”
